The New Year is a Great Time for PFLAG!

The Holidays are swiftly coming to an end. As we head towards the new year, it’s a great time to talk about those folks you spent the last week or so with. Recently, BPSF’s very own Ted Marchut attended the Austin PFLAG conference to learn more about the organization and how to start a chapter in San Marcos.

For those of you unfamiliar with PFLAG, they offer, “support to LGBTQI people, as well as their families and allies” and have a mission for, “a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed.”

To get the whole history and mission statement of the organization, check out their about us section.

Held at  the Live Oak Unitarian Church, the conference focused on education and, “…covered topics from how to work with the media, to how to provide support to faith parents and families” reports Ted.  There were also guest speakers, including a couple in the process of taking a marriage rights case through the court system and a women who came out at the age of 60.  Ultimatly, the day-long experience was about sharing perspectives says Ted, ” the big thing I took away, was a better understanding of the perspectives of so many people, from transgender people, to parents working through issues of faith, and of how important it is, to be open and understanding of the experiences of others.  I think I also came away with a lot of new tools and resources, to be a stronger ally to the LGBTQI community. “

With 2015 just days away it’s exciting to know that San Marcos is well on its way to having its own PFLAG chapter. Thanks to Ted for taking the lead on this project and getting a much needed resource to San Marcos. The San Marcos chapter hopes to be up and running by the early part of the year.
